One Year of Fatherhood

Relatively easy post to write today as I try to get back in the habit after being sick for the better part of the last week.

Today, Ian turns 1 which means we managed to get through an entire year of parenthood and the lessons are so valuable.

First and foremost, as anyone with kids can tell you, I’m not sure I’ve ever felt love for another human in the way I feel it for Ian. It’s an unbelievable feeling to randomly smile at the thought of the little guy.

Second, there’s nothing as rewarding as your child laughing or wanting to be held by you. The best part of my day has become Ian crawling to me in the morning after breakfast and jumping into my arms when he gets home.

I still have no clue what I am doing, but I’m certainly learning and enjoying the process along the way. So much of parenting thus far has been trial and error, but it’s extremely rewarding when you get it right.

Several of my friends are starting to have kids and I often get asked for advice now. My response is simple — just like everything else in life, there are 2-3 things that really made an impact: being present and putting Ian on a sleep schedule, thanks to Anita.

Speaking of Anita, I’m so lucky to have a partner in life that makes things easier. I couldn’t imagine raising Ian without her and I’m clueless as to how single parents do it. She has sacrificed so much in this last year and even though Ian can’t physically say “thank you” yet, I know he’s definitely thinking it.

One year of fatherhood is in the books, and I can’t wait for more plus the fun that lies ahead as Ian learns to walk, talk, and continues to grow into the person he’s going to become.
