Morning Routine Momentum
As a confidence booster, momentum is highly underrated.
Let a sales team get a few wins and a taste of winning (plus a big commission check), and you’ll be surprised with the progress they’ll make quickly.
It’s the same concept that keeps my morning routine - accomplishing something early in the day means I’m more likely to keep it going. I try to start about 1-1.5 hours before the kids get up for school. Once they’re up, I’m making them breakfast and helping to get them out the door.
My routine is simple:
- Make my coffee. I purposefully use the pour-over method and leave the phone in the other room. There’s something therapeutic about boiling the water, measuring and grinding the beans, and taking your time to get a good cup.
- Morning journal. Usually, it is my favorite part of the day, and the template is simple: 2 gratitudes, 2 things I’m proud of from the day before (build momentum), and 1 highlight. The highlight works backward and answers the question, “What would be the highlight of my day if I accomplished it?”
- 30 minutes of writing on work. Self-explanatory: I take a topic I’ve been thinking about and write for a few minutes to connect concepts on my mind.
- 10-minute meditation on Headspace. I don’t always get to this one, but I’m working to get better at it. When I get to it consistently, I can feel the difference in my focus.
There’s a lot of self-help out there, and a lot of it is BS. But, the morning routine is highly effective. If you want to build a little momentum each day, give it a shot.
